Willamette Valley wineries and tasting rooms
Long before it was wine country, this ground already had names for what made it different. The village of Eola, incorporated by Oregon's territorial legislature on January 17, 1856, took its name from Aeolus, the Greek god of wind, the same wind that today defines the Eola-Amity Hills a few miles west of Salem. Farther north, "Chehalem" started as a creek-side lumber mill in 1834 and became a platted town in 1848, decades before anyone thought to plant a vine on the mountains that would eventually take its name: the Chehalem Mountains, the highest ground in the valley.
The wine industry didn't get around to making any of it official until 1983, when the Willamette Valley AVA became Oregon's first federally recognized American Viticultural Area, the 55th in the country and still the state's largest by far, running 3.4 million acres from the edge of Portland to Cottage Grove, 120 miles south. Oregon backed the designation with a labeling law stricter than anywhere else in the US: a bottle that says "Pinot Noir" has to be at least 90% Pinot Noir, versus the 75% the federal government requires everywhere else, a promise, written into law, that the name on the label means what it says.
That single valley-wide AVA now nests eleven more inside it, each staking a claim to its own dirt: the volcanic Dundee Hills, the wind-scoured Eola-Amity Hills, the marine-sediment horseshoe of Yamhill-Carlton, and newer ones still being drawn, including Laurelwood District and Tualatin Hills, both official only since 2020. No two of them taste quite the same, which is the entire point of drawing the lines in the first place.
