Dundee wineries and tasting rooms
Dundee's name is borrowed, and the man who lent it never finished what he actually came to build. William Reid, a Scottish-born railroad developer, ran the Oregonian Railway through this stretch of Yamhill County in the 1870s and named the stop after his hometown of Dundee, Scotland. The post office cycled through "Ekins" in 1881 and "Dundee Junction" in 1887 before settling on the shorter name in 1897; the river bridge and rail junction Reid had actually planned here never got built. What stuck was the name. What filled in behind it, decades later, was the ground.
That ground turned out to be Jory, the iron-red volcanic clay that covers the Dundee Hills rising directly behind downtown, and growers had it planted with Pinot Noir by the mid-1960s. The bet paid off on a world stage in 1979, when David Lett's 1975 Eyrie Pinot Noir placed among the top wines at the Gault-Millau French Wine Olympiad in Paris, a result Decanter, in a 2024 feature, called a moment that "would change Oregon and American wine forever." Robert Drouhin's own Burgundy house planted its Dundee Hills vineyard here in 1987, validating, in the magazine's words, "the 'New World' upstarts and their commitment to Oregon's viticultural potential." The hills have kept delivering since: in 2016, Wine Spectator ranked Domaine Serene's Dundee Hills Chardonnay No. 2 on its Top 10 wines of the year, with Argyle Winery Tasting House, The Four Graces, Winderlea Vineyard & Winery, Torii Mor Winery, and Domaine Roy & fils all pouring nearby along Highway 99W.
Downtown itself runs small: 1.36 square miles, easy to cover on foot. Red Hills Market has anchored SW 7th Street with wood-fired pizza and Willamette Valley wine by the glass for 15 years, the kind of counter where winemakers and weekend visitors order off the same menu. A few blocks over, the Dundee Bistro ran as "the place for vintners and friends" from 1999 until it closed in 2025, 26 years of feeding the same wine-country crowd Red Hills Market keeps feeding today.
Forty-four percent of Dundee's wineries welcome dogs, and most of them sit close enough to walk between. Start downtown and work your way up into the Dundee Hills behind it, or scroll the full list below.
