Columbia Gorge AVA wineries and tasting rooms
Columbia Gorge AVA covers one of the sharpest climate transitions in American wine country: annual rainfall runs from roughly 36 inches near Hood River down to about 10 near the AVA's eastern edge at The Dalles, a nearly four-fold drop across a boundary defined partly by a 2,000-foot elevation contour. Wine economist Mike Veseth, reporting from the ground in 2013, called it a place "trapped between two worlds": Oregon-style Pinot Noir and Riesling in the wet west, Washington-style Syrah and Zinfandel in the dry east, inside one 179,200-acre AVA established in 2004.
Veseth found the whole gradient compressed onto a single hillside at The Pines 1852, where grower Lonnie Wright tends 120-year-old Zinfandel vines that "cascaded down the south-facing slope while Pinot Noir vines streamed down the north-facing side." Viento Wines' Rich Cushman makes Rieslings Veseth described as "works of the Riesling-maker's art," while Phelps Creek Vineyards' Bob and Becky Morus lean their Chardonnay and Pinot deliberately Burgundian.
Roughly 90 vineyards and 50 wineries now work both ends of that gradient, planting Pinot Blanc and Gewürztraminer where the rain is heaviest and Tempranillo and Sangiovese where it barely falls at all: 30-plus varieties total, inside a 40-mile stretch of the Columbia River.
The wineries below split the same way the AVA does, across the Columbia Gorge/Valley region. Check which end of the Gorge each one is working before you decide what to expect in the glass.
