Walla Walla Valley wineries and tasting rooms

Walla Walla Valley is one of the only wine regions in the country that genuinely straddles a state line, crossing from Washington into Oregon and back again along its own federally drawn boundary. Most of its 135-plus wineries cluster around the city of Walla Walla on the Washington side, but the Walla Walla Valley Wine Alliance names Oregon as one of its own six official wine districts outright: "Keep heading south, and you'll be across the Oregon border before you know it."

Oregon's slice centers on Milton-Freewater, and it isn't a footnote: it produced an AVA of its own inside the broader Walla Walla Valley AVA. Zerba Cellars, founded 2002, farms three vineyards on the Oregon side and calls itself flatly "an Oregon winery located in the heart of the Walla Walla Valley." Watermill Winery, also in Milton-Freewater, is three generations into working the same stretch of ground. Both draw fruit from the cobblestone alluvial fan that would eventually become The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater, an AVA carved entirely out of Oregon soil, inside an appellation Washington still gets most of the credit for.

When the Rocks District won federal recognition in 2015, Washington State Wine's own president framed it as bigger than either state: not about borders, Steve Warner said, but "about the Pacific Northwest and our growing reputation as home to world-class wines", a fair description of a valley that has never much respected the line running through it.
