Chardonnay wineries and tasting rooms in Oregon
Oregon Chardonnay had a rough start. Early Willamette Valley plantings used warm-climate Wente clones imported from California, and they struggled to fully ripen in Oregon's cooler growing season: thin, green wines that did the grape no favors.
The fix came from Burgundy. In 1988, a group of Oregon growers traveled there to source Dijon clones bred for cooler sites, and once the clones cleared US quarantine in the 1990s, they were adopted across the valley, ripening earlier and more consistently and finally giving winemakers real material to build a style around: acid-driven, mineral-textured Chardonnay instead of the riper, oakier wines associated with warmer California regions.
That bet paid off spectacularly in 2023, a vintage Decanter's US editor Clive Pursehouse called "a year of exquisite Chardonnay." It produced Oregon's first-ever 100-point wine from the magazine: Bethel Heights Vineyard's 2023 The High Wire, the only Chardonnay anywhere in the world that year to earn a perfect score from Decanter.
A grape that spent its first Oregon decades apologizing for itself now has a producer holding a perfect score, proof of what a change in plant material and three warm-cool decades can do. The list below has both camps, old-guard and new. Taste the difference.
