Walla Walla Valley AVA wineries and tasting rooms

Walla Walla Valley became an AVA in 1984, drawn to straddle the Washington-Oregon state line on purpose: the federal boundary description crosses it twice, once heading south and once looping back. Most of the valley's more than 135 wineries cluster on the Washington side, but the designation itself doesn't distinguish between the two; a Milton-Freewater vineyard and a downtown Walla Walla one share the same appellation on the label.

Oregon's slice isn't an afterthought. Zerba Cellars, founded 2002, calls itself outright "an Oregon winery located in the heart of the Walla Walla Valley," and Watermill Winery has worked the same Milton-Freewater ground for three generations. Growers on the Oregon side pushed hardest for the valley's most specific new appellation, too: geologist Kevin Pogue's 2015 petition for The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater carved a distinct, cobble-soil AVA entirely out of Oregon territory, nested inside Walla Walla Valley's much larger boundary.

Washington State Wine's own president framed the cross-border reality bluntly when the Rocks District was approved, calling it a matter of "the Pacific Northwest and our growing reputation as home to world-class wines." Walla Walla Valley has treated the line the same way since 1984: present on the map, mostly irrelevant to what's actually planted on either side of it.

The wineries below are all working the Oregon half of that shared appellation, part of the Walla Walla Valley region. Taste one against a Washington-side bottling to see how much the state line actually matters in the glass.
