Yamhill-Carlton AVA wineries and tasting rooms
The Coast Range foothills wrap around Carlton and Yamhill in a rough horseshoe, and that shape is the whole reason the AVA exists: it blocks enough marine air to run warmer and drier than the rest of the northern Willamette Valley, on ground the federal designation caps between 200 and 1,000 feet. Growers here work Willakenzie soil at its oldest: uplifted marine sandstone and siltstone laid down some 40 to 45 million years ago, among the oldest parent material anywhere in the valley.
The AVA became official in 2004 as "Yamhill-Carlton District," then dropped the "District" in 2010 once the name had stuck. Shea Wine Cellars is one of its oldest working vineyards, planted in 1989 by Dick and Deirdre Shea and now 280 acres; the Sheas sell roughly 80% of their Pinot Noir fruit to other producers, which means a lot of bottles carrying other labels are quietly Yamhill-Carlton wine underneath. At Belle Pente, the estate's shallow Willakenzie block sits on land that was an Italian plum orchard until the Columbus Day Storm flattened it in October 1962; it's been dry-farmed and organic since 2000.
WillaKenzie Estate took its name directly from the soil underneath its 420 acres, which is as good a summary as any of how central the dirt is to this AVA's identity. What's now 127 vineyards and 63 wineries across nearly 2,850 planted acres started with growers betting that pale, mineral-driven marine sediment could make red wine as well as any red volcanic hillside could.
