Southern Oregon wineries and tasting rooms
Southern Oregon is the umbrella that Willamette Valley made necessary. By the early 2000s, wine trade publications were already calling the state's warmer southern valleys "Southern Oregon" out of habit, and Douglas, Jackson, and Josephine County business listings used the term too, so in 2002, Abacela's Earl Jones and viticultural climatologist Gregory V. Jones petitioned the federal government to make it official. The stated reasoning, right in the rule: an appellation that would "help distinguish" these wines "from Oregon's Willamette Valley wines, which are significantly different." It became law in 2005 as the Southern Oregon AVA, nesting the already-established Rogue Valley, Umpqua Valley, and Applegate Valley AVAs inside one two-million-acre boundary.
The ground underneath is genuinely older than the Willamette's: the government's own petition traces Southern Oregon's soils to the 200-million-year-old Klamath Mountains, versus the roughly 25-million-year-old marine and basalt-flow geology to the north. Grape-growing here goes back almost as far as the region's written history: not long after Britt's first vines went in near Jacksonville, Jesse Applegate, the valley's namesake, planted 1,200 vines of his own near Umpqua.
The climate case is just as concrete. Southern Oregon runs about 2,508 growing-degree-days a year against the Willamette Valley's 2,034, and harvest typically starts here about ten days earlier for the same varieties (Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris) planted a few hours north. That's roughly 120 vineyards and 3,000-plus planted acres working three distinct river valleys under one name, each with its own AVA and its own argument for why it's different from the other two.
Pick a valley below (Rogue, Umpqua, Applegate) or just start scrolling the wineries; the common thread across all of them is heat this state's more famous region simply doesn't get.
