Viognier's Oregon story starts with experimentation: growers in the Rogue Valley and Applegate Valley began testing the grape in the late 1980s, part of a broader push into Rhône varieties that's been building in southern Oregon ever since.
The valley's warm days ripen Viognier fully, while cooler nights keep the wine from turning heavy: a balance that sets it apart from Viognier grown in warmer, less variable climates. It's usually planted alongside other Rhône grapes like Syrah, reflecting how much of southern Oregon's identity now runs through that style rather than Bordeaux varieties.
It's still a minor planting. Most producers make it in small volumes, often as the white counterpart to a Syrah or GSM program rather than a wine built to stand alone.
Look for it on tasting menus in the Rogue and Applegate Valleys below as the white pour alongside a producer's Rhône reds, usually where it shows its truest side.
