Tempranillo wineries and tasting rooms in Oregon
Tempranillo arrived in Oregon in 1995, when Abacela planted the state's first vines in the Umpqua Valley. Founder Earl Jones, a dermatologist turned viticulturist, had concluded the region's climate resembled Spain's Rioja and Ribera del Duero closely enough to bet an entire winery on it.
Decanter's Southern Oregon profile credits Jones as the first person in America to grow and produce Tempranillo, leaning on the Umpqua Valley's six-month frost-free window and day-night temperature swings that can exceed 20°C: exactly the long, warm-but-variable season the grape needs to ripen fully.
It's since spread into the Rogue and Applegate Valleys as well, and Oregon examples tend to show more structure and acidity than the softer, riper style Tempranillo can take on in warmer regions. Abacela's 2017 Reserve was named one of Decanter's 10 Southern Oregon wines to try.
