Portland wineries and tasting rooms
Portland doesn't have a single vineyard inside its city limits, and its wine scene has stopped apologizing for that. The New York Times caught the shift early, writing in 2013 that "vintners are moving their operations from wine country in the Willamette Valley to the city" itself, a trend that's only grown since. What it has instead is a real cluster of bonded wineries fermenting on-site, not just pouring, out of warehouses and storefronts scattered across the east side. Laurie Lewis and Renee Neely started the trend in 2001 when they opened Hip Chicks Do Wine in inner Southeast Portland, and Lewis went on to co-found the trade group that still tracks the scene, PDX Urban Wineries. Its official roster runs 15 members; Lewis puts the real number higher: "realistically there are more like 30 to 32 wineries inside Portland's city limits."
That density needed real infrastructure to happen. Kate Norris and Tom Monroe, who trained in Beaujolais and Burgundy before working Willamette Valley harvests, founded Division Winemaking Co in 2010, then in August 2012 opened the Southeast Wine Collective: a shared custom-crush space that, over its run, worked more than 1,000 tons of fruit from a dozen AVAs for up to ten winemaking tenants at once and helped launch 19 separate wine labels. The Collective's physical space closed in 2021, a pandemic casualty; Norris and Monroe kept making Division's wine under their own label a few blocks away, in the same Division-Clinton neighborhood.
The model kept mutating after that. Willamette Week, in a 2024 retrospective, still calls Hip Chicks Do Wine "Portland's oldest urban winery," tracing the scene's arc from that early opening through Coopers Hall's "keg-wine movement" to today's newer wave of collective tasting rooms. Coopers Hall opened in 2014 in a converted building on SE 6th Avenue and calls itself, in its own account, "the first keg-focused winery in the state of Oregon," serving wine on tap instead of in bottles and estimating it has kept more than 500,000 bottles out of the waste stream over its first decade. ENSO Winery, pouring from SE Stark since 2011, and Bow & Arrow, running a Loire Valley-leaning list of Melon, Chenin Blanc, and Gamay out of Northeast Portland, are both still making their wine on the same block where they sell it.
None of the fruit in any of these bottles grew here; it's trucked in from the Willamette Valley and beyond, same as it's always been. What's different is the winemaking, happening now in enough warehouses and storefronts that Clay Pigeon Winery, Boedecker Cellars, and the rest of the wineries below can turn a single afternoon into a real tasting-room crawl. Start wherever you're staying and work outward; nothing here is more than a short drive from downtown.

Is Portland worth visiting for wine?
The New York Times caught the shift early, writing in 2013 that "vintners are moving their operations from wine country in the Willamette Valley to the city" itself. None of the fruit grows within Portland's limits, but the winemaking does, in bonded wineries scattered across east-side warehouses and storefronts close enough for a single afternoon's tasting-room crawl.
