Portland Metro wineries and tasting rooms
Laurie Lewis and Renee Neely opened Hip Chicks Do Wine in inner Southeast Portland in 2001, two years after founding the label, self-described, accurately, as the city's oldest urban winery. What they started was a real, dated lineage of people making wine inside city limits instead of out at the vineyard: Boedecker Cellars moved into a restored 1956 warehouse in Northwest Portland in the mid-2000s after Athena Pappas and Stewart Boedecker met making wine together at Oregon's first shared-use facility in Carlton.
The idea peaked with the Southeast Wine Collective, opened in August 2012 by Kate Norris and Tom Monroe as a shared custom-crush space explicitly built to let small urban winemakers split equipment and rent: "designed to bring together like-minded winemakers," the Collective's own founding language put it. Imbibe Magazine named it 2013's Wine Bar of the Year, with label-mates working under its roof.
The Collective's physical space closed in 2021, a pandemic casualty, and Norris and Monroe kept making wine under their own label a few blocks away in the same Division-Clinton neighborhood. Bow & Arrow's Scott Frank, a former day-job wine buyer, is still running his label out of Northeast Portland with a Loire Valley lens instead of a Burgundian one (Melon, Chenin Blanc, Gamay). ENSO Winery, on SE Stark since 2011, still makes the wine on-site.
None of it grows here (the fruit comes from the Willamette Valley and beyond), but the winemaking does, in warehouses and storefronts a short drive from wherever you're staying. Start with the tasting rooms below and work your way out to the vineyards later.
