McMinnville AVA wineries and tasting rooms

McMinnville AVA sits on a bench above the valley floor, on soil the federal petition describes as a hybrid: shallow silty clay loams over the Nestucca Formation, roughly 2,000 feet of marine sandstone and mudstone shot through with basalt intrusions, not purely volcanic like Dundee Hills, not purely sedimentary like the valley floor, but genuinely both. Hyland Estates' vineyard predates the AVA by more than three decades, planted in 1971 by four founding families on largely own-rooted, ungrafted vines, a rarity anywhere in Oregon.

The AVA became official in 2005 after Youngberg Hill's Kevin Byrd filed the petition in 2002, originally proposing an 800-foot elevation cap. A pair of growers farming at 1,200 feet pushed back with their own ripening data showing high-elevation fruit matched lower sites just fine, and the federal government dropped the cap entirely in the final rule, a rare case of one grower's numbers redrawing an AVA boundary.

McMinnville the town has hosted the International Pinot Noir Celebration every July since 1987, on what's now the Linfield University campus, a long-running reason for Pinot lovers to end up here regardless of which corner of the Willamette Valley they came to taste.
