Pinot Blanc wineries and tasting rooms in Oregon
Pinot Blanc has one of the longest paper trails of any grape in Oregon. German immigrant Ernest Reuter planted it, under its old name, Klevner, near Forest Grove in the 1880s, and won a gold medal for it at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. It's a strange thing to plant an entire century before anyone would call Oregon a wine region, but the vines were there.
It never became a mainstay. What's left is a small, mostly overlooked planting concentrated in the Van Duzer Corridor AVA, where cooling Pacific wind funnels through a gap in the Coast Range and keeps the grape's natural acidity intact through the growing season.
The wines that come out of it are lean and citrus-driven: lighter-bodied than the Pinot Blanc you'd find in Alsace or northern Italy, and made in tiny enough quantities that most Oregon drinkers have never tried one. That's arguably the appeal: it's one of the only varieties in the state you can taste more or less at its 1880s starting point.
It won't be on every list below, but if you find a winery pouring it, you're tasting one of the state's oldest continuously grown grapes, still made by almost nobody else here.
