Columbia Valley AVA wineries and tasting rooms
Columbia Valley is one of the largest AVAs in the country: roughly 11.5 million acres established in 1984, spanning central and southern Washington and reaching into a strip of north-central Oregon along Highway 74 through Gilliam, Morrow, and Umatilla counties. Washington holds nearly all the planted acreage; Oregon's share of the AVA's actual vineyard footprint is small by comparison.
The honest Oregon angle isn't that thin northern strip, though: it's that Walla Walla Valley and The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater both sit entirely within Columbia Valley's outer boundary too, nested appellations inside the bigger umbrella. Oregon's real stake in Columbia Valley runs through those two more specific AVAs rather than the sparse ground up near Heppner.
Treat this AVA as the wide frame the smaller, more distinctive Oregon appellations sit inside. Explore Walla Walla Valley and the Rocks District directly for what's actually planted on this side of the state line.
