Columbia Valley is one of the largest AVAs in the country: roughly 11.5 million acres established in 1984, spanning central and southern Washington and reaching into a strip of north-central Oregon along Highway 74 through Gilliam, Morrow, and Umatilla counties. Washington holds nearly all the planted acreage; Oregon's share of the AVA's actual vineyard footprint is small by comparison.
The honest Oregon angle isn't that thin northern strip, though: it's that Walla Walla Valley and The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater both sit entirely within Columbia Valley's outer boundary too, nested appellations inside the bigger umbrella.
