Yamhill wineries and tasting rooms

Yamhill was North Yamhill before it was Yamhill: the Oregon Legislature incorporated it under the shorter name on February 20, 1891, and the town has stayed close to what that implies ever since. About 1,200 people live there now, and the city's own site describes it, plainly, as "a small farming town." What makes it a wine town too is the horseshoe of hills wrapping Yamhill and Carlton together, ground old and sedimentary enough that growers eventually built an entire AVA around it: the Yamhill-Carlton district. Decanter called that district "an oasis for Pinot Noir" in a 2025 feature, tracing its pioneering plantings back to 1974.

WillaKenzie Estate is the clearest example of a winery named for its own dirt. Bernard and Ronni Lacroute bought a 420-acre cattle farm outside town in 1991 and named the place for the Willakenzie soil underneath it, Bernard's own attempt, as a Burgundy native, to bring some of that region's discipline west. French winemaker Laurent Montalieu joined in 1994, and the estate started bottling its own label instead of just selling grapes. It became Oregon's first LIVE-certified winery in 2008, and by 2011 solar panels covered about half its own electricity use. The Lacroutes retired in 2016 and handed the estate to Jackson Family Wines, who kept the certifications and the name intact.

A few of Yamhill's other wineries carry just as specific a story. Lenné Estate was planted in 2000 on a hillside of peavine soil, rocky enough that growers elsewhere in the valley rate it close to the worst farmland Oregon has; Steve and Karen Lutz built a Pinot Noir program on exactly that stinginess, going fully organic with the 2023 vintage. Stag Hollow's founders bought a sheep farm here in 1989 after honeymooning through the wine regions of Italy and Spain, built an octagonal house, and planted vines at close to three times normal density, while still setting aside twelve acres for oak woodland and wetland instead of more rows. Soléna Estate, established in 2000 and named for the founders' daughter, farms its home vineyard biodynamically.

That ground made national news again in December 2025, when Wine Spectator placed Ken Wright's Yamhill-Carlton Shea Vineyard Pinot Noir among its Top 100 Wines of the Year. The town stays plain about what it is otherwise: more tractor traffic than tour buses, a couple of family-run spots downtown for pizza or a taco, and the wineries a short drive out into the hills rather than lined up on a main street.
