Dundee Hills AVA wineries and tasting rooms
David Lett rolled into Oregon in 1965 hunting for a place cool enough to grow Pinot Noir the way Burgundy did, and by 1966 he'd settled on a south-facing slope of what locals still called the Red Hills of Dundee. The dirt underneath is Jory soil, an iron-red volcanic clay that covers roughly 80% of what's now the Dundee Hills AVA: deep, well-drained, and stingy enough with nutrients to stress a vine into concentrating flavor instead of just growing leaves.
By the time growers formalized the ground into an AVA, they almost named it after somewhere else. The petition, filed by Sokol Blosser's Alex Sokol Blosser in 2002, first proposed "Red Hills," then "Red Hills of Dundee," before the federal government settled on "Dundee Hills" in 2004, to avoid confusion with other Red Hills scattered around the world. The petition's own numbers show how fast the ground had filled in by then: 299 planted acres in 1980, 577 by 1990, 1,264 by 2002, a fourfold increase in two decades, on hills that top out at 1,067 feet and never dip below 200.
Robert Drouhin, the Burgundy négociant who staged the widely remembered 1980 rematch against Lett's Pinot and lost by two-tenths of a point, put his money where the comparison was: he bought land here and founded Domaine Drouhin Oregon in 1987. Almost forty years later, the AVA counts 28 LIVE-certified vineyards and, per its own association, three B-Corp certified wineries, more than any other wine region in the world, spread across 23 grape varieties, 28 miles southwest of Portland.
Eyrie and Domaine Drouhin are still pouring, alongside a newer generation working the same red dirt. The wineries below are all farming some version of that Jory clay, part of the wider Willamette Valley.
