McMinnville wineries and tasting rooms

William T. Newby built a gristmill at what's now the west end of Third Street in 1853, and surveyor Sebastian Adams platted the town around it three years later. By 1928 the block between the city park and the rail line had filled in with the brick storefronts that still frame Third Street's six-block run of restored buildings today. None of that was built with wine in mind. The identity showed up later: in 1987, a group of Oregon winemakers, restaurateurs, and retailers launched the International Pinot Noir Celebration on the Linfield University campus at the edge of downtown, drawing winemakers from as far as Argentina and New Zealand every year since, pouring alongside the Willamette Valley's own. 1859 Oregon's Magazine called the result, in a 2022 feature, "the epicenter of Oregon's wine world," a reputation the town's own 1972 Sunset write-up never saw coming.

The weekend now runs roughly 950 people through 250-plus wines poured by more than 70 producers, enough that the Washington Post's Dave McIntyre has called it, simply, "the best consumer wine event in the United States." Decanter agreed in 2024, naming IPNC the only North American wine event carrying its formal endorsement: North American editor Clive Pursehouse called it "a Pinot Noir lover's dream." Linfield leaned into the connection instead of just hosting it: the university built an Oregon Wine History Archive in 2011 and opened a full Center for Wine Education in 2018, teaching, on the same campus, the subject it spends one weekend a year celebrating.

The hospitality caught up with the wine on its own schedule. Erin Stephenson, Brian Shea, and Ben Perle started with a handful of rooms under the name 3rd Street Flats in 2010, then expanded into the 36-room Atticus Hotel in 2018, pairing it with a restaurant, Bless Your Heart Burgers, built alongside Portland chefs Drew Sprouse and John Gorham. Even the town's non-wine landmark has wine money behind it now: in 2020, Bill Stoller, owner of Stoller Family Estate in the nearby Dundee Hills, paid $9.5 million for the 285-acre Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum campus and its Spruce Goose, saying flatly, "it's preservation of the history."

Start on Third Street itself, the strip Sunset magazine named the West's Best Main Street in 2017 ("wine and beer are really woven through the fabric of McMinnville," in Mayor Remy Drabkin's words), where R. Stuart & Co. Winery & Wine Bar pours a couple of blocks from Hotel Oregon, then head for the hills: The Eyrie Vineyards keeps a downtown tasting room even though its original vines are miles out in the Dundee Hills, while Youngberg Hill and Maysara Winery farm the mixed volcanic-and-marine ground of the McMinnville AVA just past the edge of town. IPNC is one weekend each July; the wineries below are open the other fifty-one.
