Sweet and dessert-style wines are a small category in Oregon, made in late-harvest, ice-wine, and botrytized styles alongside the state's much larger dry wine production. Late-harvest wines come from grapes left on the vine past the normal picking date to concentrate sugar and flavor; ice-wine-style bottlings use grapes frozen after harvest to do the same.
It's a minor share of the state's output next to Pinot Noir and Oregon's dry whites, but it's not an afterthought where it's made: the category takes the same own-rooted, decades-old vineyard sites Oregon is known for and pushes them somewhere different.
Brooks makes its Hyland Vineyard Riesling in a spätlese-style late-harvest mode, from own-rooted vines planted in the 1970s, a wine Decanter featured in its 2026 Trailblazers of the Willamette Valley tasting.
Ask at the tasting room whether a winery below makes anything in this style: most don't make much of it, and what they do make rarely leaves the cellar door.
