Willamette Valley AVA wineries and tasting rooms
Ask a dozen Willamette Valley winemakers why their Pinot tastes different from the vineyard next door, and most will start talking about dirt. The valley's signature soil is Jory: iron-rich, deep red, born of basaltic lava flows that moved through the region 15 to 17 million years ago. It runs thickest through the Dundee Hills, where winemaker Don Lange says the fruit picks up a character that repeats every year: "the spice from the volcanic Jory soils seems pretty consistent vintage to vintage," cinnamon, clove, allspice, according to Oregon Wine Press's own 2013 survey of the valley's dirt.
Head northwest into Ribbon Ridge and the ground changes entirely. Willakenzie soil is marine sediment: old seabed, uplifted and folded, a mustard-toned silty clay instead of Jory's red basalt. Brick House's Doug Tunnell has watched it shift color under his own vines: "some hillsides are somewhat reddish, others almost sandy white," he told the same survey, with topsoil depth swinging from 11 inches to four feet inside a single vineyard.
Farther south, the Eola-Amity Hills sit on their own basalt: Nekia and Gelderman soils that run shallower and hold far less water than the Jory up in Dundee, part of why the same grape ripens differently just a few miles apart. And where the Coast Range breaks open at the Van Duzer Corridor, Pacific wind pours straight into the valley, cooling everything from the marine sediment on the corridor floor to the volcanic ground of its neighbors on either side, a gradient the federal government mapped out in detail when it drew the corridor's own AVA boundary in 2019.
