Riesling wineries and tasting rooms in Oregon
Riesling has been in Oregon almost as long as anyone's been making wine here seriously. Richard Sommer planted it at HillCrest Vineyard in the Umpqua Valley in 1961, four years before David Lett put in his first Pinot Noir vines up in the Willamette Valley.
Today it's grown throughout the Willamette Valley, especially in cooler pockets like Eola-Amity Hills, where Pacific air funneling through the Van Duzer Corridor keeps late-summer temperatures down and holds onto the grape's acidity. Oregon Riesling is usually dry to off-dry: floral, apple-scented, with enough natural acid that it never needs the heavier sweetness German styles lean on.
Decanter's Clive Pursehouse has called the valley's top examples "the very best of the variety on the West Coast," pointing to own-rooted vines planted in the 1970s at McMinnville's Hyland Vineyard and to specialists like Brooks and Trisaetum, both of whom bottle multiple single-vineyard expressions. Martin Woods's 2019 Hyland Vineyard Riesling backed that up with a 95-point score from Decanter.
