Newberg wineries and tasting rooms
Newberg's founders were Quakers, and the town they built ran dry on principle: alcohol stayed illegal here until 1966, more than eighty years after postmaster Sebastian Brutscher named the place for his hometown of Neuberg, Germany, in 1869. That's the same year, a few miles up the road in the Dundee Hills, David Lett was staking out the south-facing slope that would become the first modern Pinot Noir planting in the Willamette Valley. The town's own news site, Newsberg, is blunt about how recent Newberg's wine identity actually is — a town that spent a century as one of the driest spots in Oregon, remade almost overnight into one of the wettest.
The reversal shows in what outside critics have noticed too: in 2023, Sunset named Newberg a winner in its Travel Awards, calling it "the northern gateway to the Willamette Valley," home, in the magazine's words, to Oregon's Pinot Noir pioneers and their walkable downtown tasting rooms. The city sits at the foot of the Chehalem Mountains, and some of the valley's most established names work within a few miles of Highway 99W: Adelsheim Vineyard, REX HILL, Penner-Ash Wine Cellars, and Raptor Ridge Winery, alongside younger labels like ROCO Winery and J.K. Carriere still building their own name recognition.
The Quaker history is still standing if you know where to look. The Hoover-Minthorn House, built in 1881 and now the only presidential house museum in the Pacific Northwest, is the oldest home in the original township, the place a nine-year-old, newly orphaned Herbert Hoover moved into with his aunt and uncle in 1885. Downtown along First Street, that history sits a short walk from the newer wine-country economy, and The Allison Inn & Spa gives visitors an actual reason to stay through the weekend instead of just passing through on their way to Dundee or Carlton. Condé Nast Traveler has named it a Readers' Choice winner every year from 2017 through 2025, calling Newberg itself "the gateway to Oregon's wine country."

Frequently asked questions
How many wineries are in Newberg?
76 wineries and tasting rooms are in Newberg, including A to Z Wineworks, Adelsheim Vineyard, and Alexana Winery.
What are the best wineries in Newberg?
Best depends on what you're after. For a different kind of visit, Adelsheim Vineyard is one of the valley's founding Pinot Noir estates, still pouring near the Chehalem Mountains it helped put on the map.
Is Newberg worth visiting for wine?
Condé Nast Traveler named The Allison Inn & Spa a Readers' Choice winner every year from 2017 through 2025, calling Newberg itself "the gateway to Oregon's wine country." Downtown tasting rooms along First Street sit a short walk from that history, with vineyards climbing into the Chehalem Mountains just behind them.
