Rogue Valley AVA wineries and tasting rooms
The Rogue Valley AVA became official in 1991, one of Oregon's oldest, and it's also one of its biggest by a wide margin: 1.15 million acres across Jackson and Josephine counties, with only about 4,000 of them actually planted to vine. That gap is the story. The AVA covers three distinct sub-valleys carved by three different watersheds, and only one of them, the Applegate Valley, has ever been split off into an AVA of its own.
Bear Creek Valley, the warmest and driest of the three, is where the Bordeaux comparisons keep coming from: DANCIN Vineyards' Dan Marca told Sip Magazine "you can sample estate-grown, award-winning Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon within a seven-minute drive" here. The Illinois Valley to the west runs cooler and wetter, coastal fog reaching in from the Pacific; Foris Vineyards has farmed the southernmost vineyard in the Pacific Northwest there since 1986.
The federal government revised the AVA's boundary again in 2024, decades after first drawing it, a reminder that even a 33-year-old appellation is still being adjusted as growers learn more about where the good ground actually is. Roughly two-thirds of what's planted across the whole AVA is red wine grapes, more than 50 varieties in total, spread across sub-valleys that can differ by ten degrees or more on the same afternoon.
The wineries below span all three sub-valleys of the Rogue Valley region under one AVA name. Check which one each producer is actually farming before you assume you know what "Rogue Valley" tastes like.
