Pinot Gris wineries and tasting rooms in Oregon
Pinot Gris followed Pinot Noir into Oregon by only a few years. In the late 1960s, David Lett brought cuttings north from the grape collection at UC Davis and planted them in the Willamette Valley, producing the first commercial Pinot Gris in the United States. Most Willamette Valley versions are still fermented in stainless steel rather than oak, which keeps the grape's naturally high acidity front and center: crisp and fruit-forward rather than round and buttery.
A growing number of producers are also working skin-contact versions, known as ramato, that lean into Pinot Gris's origin as a pink-skinned mutation of Pinot Noir: copper-hued wines with more grip and texture than the stainless-steel norm.
The reference point is still the wine that started it. When Decanter's Michael Alberty picked 23 of the best Willamette Valley Pinot Gris for the magazine in 2023, Eyrie's Estate bottling topped the list, the tasting note calling it "the bar by which many Willamette Valley producers measure their own."
