The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater AVA wineries and tasting rooms

Roughly 96% of The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater sits on a single soil series: Freewater, a bed of loose basalt cobblestones and gravel that the Walla Walla River carried down from the Blue Mountains and dropped across an alluvial fan, sometimes 30 feet deep or more before hitting solid bedrock. It's the reason trade press consistently calls this the only AVA in the country whose boundary was drawn around one soil type rather than a region's general geography.

Geologist Kevin Pogue, a professor at Whitman College across the state line in Walla Walla, filed the petition that made it official in 2015, Oregon's 18th AVA. "The concept behind AVAs is to recognize regions that have truly unique growing conditions," Pogue said at the time. The federal petition itself explains the mechanism plainly: the cobbles absorb and radiate solar heat, warming the soil and air enough to speed up bud break, flowering, and ripening ahead of the silt-loam ground just outside the AVA's edge.

The wine world noticed fast. Zerba Cellars farms three vineyards here, including one it calls Dad's Vineyard, right up against the state line. Oregon Wine Board chair Ellen Brittan called the designation a chance for growers to "better differentiate the unique characteristics of their wines", and the accolades backed her up almost immediately: Wine Enthusiast ranked Holocene Wines's 2022 The Black Square Cabernet Sauvignon, grown on this ground, No. 5 on its Enthusiast 100 for 2025, the highest finish of any Oregon wine that year.

Nineteen growers were named in the original petition, three with working wineries on-site. Watermill Winery is one of them, three generations into farming the same rocky floodplain in the Walla Walla Valley region. The wineries below are all working some stretch of that same 30-foot bed of basalt. Ask each one how the cobbles show up in the glass; almost every grower here has a different answer.
