Cabernet Franc wineries and tasting rooms in Oregon
Cabernet Franc has been part of southern Oregon's vineyards since the earliest plantings in the Rogue Valley in the 1800s, grown today alongside Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in both the Rogue Valley and the neighboring Applegate Valley AVA.
These are warm, dry sites by Oregon standards, but nights cool off sharply, and growers lean on that swing to keep acidity in the fruit as it ripens. Cabernet Franc ripens earlier and has thinner skin than Cabernet Sauvignon, so it tends to go into the valley's slightly cooler pockets, showing up in the glass as brighter fruit and firmer tannin than the variety often carries in warmer regions.
It's still a supporting variety here rather than a headline one: most of it goes into blends with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot rather than standing alone as a single-variety bottling. But a handful of southern Oregon producers are betting on it as the region's structure grape, the one that gives their Bordeaux-style reds their backbone.
