Zinfandel wineries and tasting rooms in Oregon
Zinfandel has one of the longest histories of any wine grape in Oregon: German immigrants planted it in the Umpqua Valley's first vineyards in the 1880s, decades before Richard Sommer founded HillCrest Vineyard there in 1961 and effectively restarted the region's wine industry.
It's grown today across the Umpqua, Rogue, and Applegate Valleys, the warmer southern part of the state, never the Willamette Valley to the north.
The wide day-to-night temperature swing across these valleys helps the grape hold onto acidity as it ripens, giving Oregon Zinfandel more moderate alcohol and brighter fruit than it typically shows in hotter California growing regions.
It's a grape that predates almost everything else on this list by a century, still grown by a handful of southern Oregon producers who never stopped. Track one down below.
