Gewürztraminer wineries and tasting rooms in Oregon
Gewürztraminer arrived in Oregon the same year as Riesling: Richard Sommer included it among the first vinifera varieties he planted at HillCrest Vineyard in the Umpqua Valley in 1961. It's an aromatic, thin-skinned grape that can turn heavy and blowsy in the wrong climate, which is exactly why growers in cool, foggy southern Oregon thought it might work.
It's still most associated with the Elkton area, home to its own Elkton Oregon AVA within the Umpqua Valley, where it grows alongside Riesling and Pinot Gris as part of a small cluster of aromatic whites. Oregon acreage is small, but the wines keep the grape's signature lychee, rose petal, and spice, usually with more restraint than the richer, higher-alcohol versions coming out of Alsace.
Elsewhere in southern Oregon, Foris Vineyards makes one of the region's benchmark versions from 40-year-old vines: a dry Gewürztraminer that Decanter singled out as one of 10 Southern Oregon wines to try.
