Müller-Thurgau wineries and tasting rooms in Oregon
Müller-Thurgau is a German cross of Riesling and Madeleine Royale bred in 1882, and it found its way into Oregon early, planted in small pockets of the Willamette Valley and Umpqua Valley almost as soon as the state's modern wine industry got going. Anne Amie Vineyards's vineyard in Yamhill-Carlton dates to 1979, including some of the oldest Müller-Thurgau vines still in the ground here.
Statewide plantings stayed small, but Oregon producers commonly ferment it dry, in an Italian-leaning style: a fruity, aromatic white built for drinking as an aperitif rather than the sweeter versions the grape is better known for in Germany.
When Oregon Wine Press went looking for the state's best Müller-Thurgau in 2023, it landed on Anne Amie, which farms nearly nine acres including those original 1979 plantings: a dry, food-friendly bottling that New York's Gramercy Tavern once poured by the glass, according to the magazine's write-up.
It's a grape most visitors have never heard of, and only a handful of wineries below still pour it. Ask for a taste if you spot it on a list.
